The Configuration of Fiumicino Airport
Leonardo da Vinci consists of two terminal buildings. The two Rome airport terminals are within walking distance of each other. In fact, you can walk from one terminal to the other in just 5-6 minutes. Nevertheless, the airport’s people mover train connects one side of terminal 3 to the other, while airport shuttles run around the terminals’ complex, the car parks, and the Cargo City.
Our Tip: The remotely-located terminal 5 is out of operation. Although it handled flights from and to the U.S.A. and Israel, it is currently under extensive renovation.
Fiumicino Airport Terminal 1
Rome airport terminal 1 mostly serves domestic and European flights. ITA Airways flies from and to T1. In detail, the airlines operating at this FCO terminal are:
- Aegean Airlines
- Air Baltic
- Air Europa
- Air France
- Air Malta
- AlbaStar
- Eurowings
- Iberia
- ITA
- KLM
- Luxair
- Norwegian
- Ryanair
- TAP Portugal
- Volotea
- Vueling
- Wizz Air
Terminal 1 was renovated and expanded, taking over the old terminal 2. Nowadays, it has 94 check-in desks as well as two checkpoints at the two ends of the building. Moreover, 83 (A1-A83) gates are to be found around the building. It is split into two parts: the Ground level houses the Arrivals, and the Fist level, along with the mezzanine floor, the Departures. T1 offers its passengers all the necessary amenities. Even more so, it hosts the largest Aelia duty-free zone in the world.
Fiumicino Airport Terminal 3
Rome airport terminal 3 is the largest of the two terminal buildings. Handling flights from and to domestic, Schengen, and non-Schengen destinations, it actually serves airlines that aren’t among the ones operating at T1. Therefore, most of the flights (especially non-Schengen ones) depart or arrive at the vast Fiumicino airport terminal 3.
T3 has 231 check-in points and 61 (E1-E61) gates. Its configuration is similar to T3. Thus, Departures are located at Level 1 and the Mezzanine floor, whereas Arrivals are on the Ground level. T3 provides its passengers with a top-quality traveling experience as well. Besides the numerous restaurants, shops, cafes, and high-class services and amenities, the Tax-Free Mall of Boarding Area E -the one-of-a-kind plaza with more than 50 stores- lies in the international area of terminal building 3.
Transfer between Fiumicino Airport Terminals
The two Rome airport terminals -terminal buildings 1 and 3- are within walking distance. Hence, you can head from one terminal to the other on foot. As a matter of fact, you won’t need more than 5-6 minutes to enter the doors of your destination terminal. Still, free shuttles run around the airport. The Airport Shuttles heads to Hilton Garden Inn Hotel and the personnel’s parking lot, leaving from the Arrivals level of both terminals every 15 minutes, around the clock. On the other hand, the Parking Shuttle is a free-of-charge airport shuttle service as well, connecting the two Rome airport terminals to the long-term parking areas. The Parking Shuttle runs 24/7, with available routes every 5 minutes from 05:00 am to 01:00 am and every 15 minutes from 01:00 am to 05:00 am. Please note that from 01:00 am to 04:00, the buses run upon request via the intercoms lying in the stops.
Moreover, you can move from one side of T3 to the other via the automated people mover. Verily, the free airport train links T3’s West side (Gates E31-E44) to the rest of the terminal. Nevertheless, passengers pass through security. Therefore, each ride is one-way.
