Fast and Efficient Train Rides from and to Fiumicino Airport

Trains from Rome Airport

Trenitalia – Italy’s major train operator- manages the rail connection of Leonardo da Vinci Airport to Rome and other Italian cities as well. Hence, the main airport in Rome is considered well-connected to all the city’s train stations, while high-speed train lines call at the FCO train station on their way to Naples, Bologna, and other popular Italy destinations.

The Leonardo Express Rome Airport Train

Leonardo Express is the fastest way to reach Roma Termini in the heart of the city. Roma Termini is the major rail hub in Rome, providing its passengers with numerous public transit connections to almost every part of the city as well as with link options to nearby and further-distanced cities and areas.

Thus, Leonardo Express leaves from the FCO train station, located in front of terminal 3 within a short distance from both terminals’ Arrivals and Departures, and heads directly to Termini Station. As a result, its traveling time is just 32 minutes, making the Leonardo Express Rome airport train the most speedy way to travel from Rome Airport to the city center. The train runs every 15 minutes from 06:08 am to 11:23 pm.

Are you landing at Fiumicino Airport during a rail strike? Leonardo Express will still be replaced by a designated bus route.

Leonardo Express carriages are all first class, while trains have accessible cars too. What’s more, they are equipped with spacious baggage racks and charging outlets. Hence, traveling with luggage via the fast Rome airport train shouldn’t trouble you much.

As far as rail tickets and fares are concerned, a one-way trip with Leonardo Express costs 14€/15.40$. Children under 4 travel for free, and one kid between 4 and 12 years of age for each paying adult is out of charge as well. Small pets (small dogs, cats, etc.) aren’t charged extra either. Finally, there is no extra fee for luggage.

You’ll have four options to buy your train tickets. To begin with, you can purchase them via the Trenitalia website. In that case, your ticket will be already validated and valid for an up-to-90-minute time slot. Alternatively, you can head to the station’s ticket offices, open from 06:45 am to 10:12 pm, or use the automatic vendors. Tickets are also available at some retail shops (newsstands, tobacconists, etc.). Nevertheless, apart from the already validated e-tickets, all tickets must be validated at the relevant green validation machines before entering the train.

The Regional FL1 Rome Airport Trains

The Regional FL1 Rome airport trains are a much more affordable yet, at the same time, more tedious and time-consuming alternative for rail rides from Fiumicino Airport to Rome. FL1 trains head to Rome, with multiple stops on their way, making them an ideal choice if your journey’s end lies close by. For instance, with an FL1 train, you’ll reach Trastevere Station in around 27 minutes (you won’t find a subway connection here), Ostience Station in 34 minutes (linked to Metro Line B), and Tuscolana Station in 41 minutes (no subway connection here either). The trains end their routes at Tiburtina Station after a 48-minute ride. At Tiburtina Station, passengers can opt for a subway transit with Line B.

The regional rail lines operate from 05:57 am to 11:27 pm (to 00:27 am on Sundays), with available routes every 15 minutes from Monday to Saturday and every 30 minutes on Sundays and public holidays. They leave from the FCO train station, lying in front of T3, nearby both terminals.

A single ticket for the FL1 train costs 8€/8.80$. Tickets are available through the station’s ticket counters (operating from 06:45 am to 10:12 pm), the automatic ticket machines, or online. Alternatively, they are sold at some newsstands, tobacconists, and travel agencies. Please keep in mind that online tickets must be printed and shown at the turnstiles. What’s more, even though online tickets don’t need validation, all other tickets must be validated at the green machines scattered around the station. Children up to 4 years old are free of charge, while each paying adult can travel with a kid aged 4-12 without having to buy an extra fare. Small pets and luggage aren’t charged either.

Our Tip 1: Unfortunately, FL1 trains don’t have designated luggage storage space. Moreover, it tends to get overcrowded during peak hours.

Our Tip 2: The FL1 ticket isn’t valid for other public transit rides. Thus, if you have an onward subway journey, you’ll have to buy a separate ticket.

Intercity Trains from Rome Airport

Leonardo da Vinci is also directly linked with many other Italian cities. Hence, the high-speed Frecciarossa train stops at the airport and allows Rome airport passengers to travel to Naples, Bologna, Padova, Venice, and Florence as soon as they land at the airport. Trains depart from Fiumicino Airport train station twice a day, at 09:38 am and 01:53 pm. Those train routes also call at Roma Termini Station with a just 32-minute traveling time from the airport to the station located in the heart of the city. Nevertheless, they aren’t recommended for rides to Rome, as they are costly even compared to the expensive Leonardo Express. Verily, one ticket for the Frecciarossa train to Termini Station is priced at 19.50€/21.40$.
